17th Adult Leadership Class begins its year Members of the 17th Jefferson County Adult Leadership class have gotten off to a good start on their nine-month program, following a kick-off retreat in September. Ten members make up this year’s class, representing businesses, educational institutions, churches, and governmental entities. The goal of the program, directed by the Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce, is to develop leaders who will have a positive impact on the growth and development of Jefferson County. Members are chosen by a committee after being nominated for membership, and filling out an application. This year’s class is composed of Ken Davis, Vicki Fowler, Pauline Allen-Holbert, Mary Leidig, Colin McRae, Paul Percy, Kevin Poe, Jill Vogelfang, Andrew Whaley and Nathan Wise. The class kicked off its year with a one and one-half day retreat at Carson Springs in Newport, and at Carson-Newman University. Class days got underway in October, and will run through May of next year. The day-long programs concentrate on the following topics: agriculture, business and industry, healthcare, human needs and services, state government, local government, education, and heritage and tourism. The state government day includes a trip to Nashville to meet local elected representatives and attend a session of the Tennessee General Assembly. Class days give members an expanded knowledge of the county, and help them understand the needs and problems facing its residents. In addition to the class days, members of the Leadership Class are required to volunteer with Christmas in Jefferson County in December, and attend meetings of County Commission and school board, as well as a planning commission and city council meeting sometime during the year. They are also required to do a ride-along with a police officer. At the end of their year together, members will agree on a class project, which they will carry out as a way of enriching their community.
