United Way of Jefferson County supporters received help from the Voice of the Vols and a beautiful singing voice as they kicked off their annual campaign yesterday morning with a goal of $200,000.

Bob Kesling, who prefaced his remarks with the assertion that he really doesn’t know who will start at quarterback for the Vols this Saturday, encouraged supporters to “give just a little more” as they try to help United Way do its work this year. But the highlight of the breakfast was singer Sherry Carr, whose performance of her original song “United Way Across America” brought a standing ovation.

Compact discs of Carr’s song, which features backing vocals from kids at her church, are available for a donation to United Way.

Kesling, who has been director of broadcasting at the University of Tennessee since 1999, began his association with the school as a walk-on fullback in 1972. He was a “spotter” for broadcasting legend John Ward for 15 years before assuming the play-by-play duties.

He told those at the breakfast that visiting organizations assisted by United Way as the campaign chair for Knox County has been “an inspiration.”

“I don’t know how they do all they do, but I am glad they’re here to help,” he said.

Jefferson City Mayor Mark Potts, who is the Jefferson County campaign chair, challenged partners to find new partners.

“At all the agencies we help, you hear the same themes,” he said. “They need more money and more volunteers to help more people. We’ve got to be there for them.”

Carol Baker, chair of the Jefferson County United Way board, served as director of ceremonies for yesterday’s kick-off, which also featured a film focusing on the Boys & Girls Club, Appalachian Outreach/Samaritan House, and Senior Citizens Home Assistance, which are among 31 helping organizations that partner with Jefferson County United Way.

Charles Gibson, also a member of the board, thanked Bojangles of Jefferson City, Perkins, Folgers, Food City, Pal’s of Jefferson City, Wal-Mart, and the Dandridge Field of Dreams Park for assistance with the breakfast. The event was held at the Field of Dreams Activity Center.
