To receive school supplies, you MUST live in either Jefferson or Grainger County. You must bring a piece of recent mail with address, you child must be present and accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Knoxville, Tenn. – Now in its 23nd year, Shoney’s KidCare Photo ID events will take place in the Greater Knoxville area for three days only, August 5, 6 & 7, 2017, in partnership with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC).

The events provide FREE KidCare Photo IDs for children, which enable parents to have information readily available for authorities in the event their child is ever reported missing. The ID’s include a color photograph; fingerprints; important information such as: height, weight, and date of birth; a medical profile; the “Seven Rules for Safety;” and a 24-hour NCMEC hotline number. Each participant will also have the opportunity to visit with Shoney Bear.

Over the past 22 years, the program has successfully provided more than 40,000 children with IDs. Community Partners are the Knoxville Police Department & Safety City, Knox County Mayor Tim Burchett & Knox County, East Tennessee Children’s Hospital, The Knoxville News-Sentinel, Walgreens, Star 102.1, Local8Now (WVLT), and The Optimist Club of Knoxville.

All parents should have a close-up, head & shoulders photo of each of their children. Unfortunately, parents think they have good photos of their children on their “smart phone” however, that is an unrealistic sense of security. Most photos on mobile phones include other

people, are not close enough and often are not a high enough quality to identify eye color, hair color and specific facial features. KPD urges parents to make time to bring their children to the free events to create good quality photos and to have your child fingerprinted. This is especially important for middle school-aged students.

What is a Pow Wow?

A powwow is many things. It's a time of celebration.
It's Indian singing. It's Indian dancing. It's Indian
food. It's a homecoming, a gathering of friends and
families. But it's so much more....It's a feeling.
Powwows are centuries-old traditions for many American
Indian nations. Many of the customs for today's powwows
came from the nomadic tribes of the Great Plains. The buffalo
was central to the Plains Indians' way of life. It was a source of
food, clothing, covering for lodges (tipis) and many other items
used in their day-to-day life. As the buffalo migrated the plains,
Indians followed. During the winter months, traveling and
hunting became very difficult, forcing the tribes to split up into
small bands related by family or clan ties.

As summer arrived, the bands would rejoin, coming together
for buffalo hunts, the major ceremonies of the tribe, and for the
powwows. These summer gatherings would bring together all
the members of each tribe. This was a time for the sharing of
stories about the great hunting feats and raiding parties, and
a time for the telling of visions and the singing of songs that held
many powers and spoke of the deeds of fallen brothers and of
ancestors gone many years. The powwows in the old days were
a time of music, songs, and dancing.

Today the spirit of the old powwows lives on. In modern times
the powwow has spread to most American Indian groups in the
lower 48 states and southern Canada. There have even been
powwows held on American military bases in Iraq. A sense of
"Pan-Indianism" has developed; the clothing and much of the
regalia that were once common only to the Plains Indians,
have been adopted in part or in whole by many American
Indians. Indian creek Productions, Inc. welcomes you to our
powwow. We know that you will feel the spirit of the old time
powwows while you are here and maybe have enough left
over to take home with you.

PARROTT-WOOD MEMORIAL LIBRARY has joined more than 1,000 libraries across the country to participate in the celestial event of the century, the August 21, 2017 Solar Eclipse. During this national event, the shadow of the moon will sweep across the United States in a narrow band from the Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic Ocean in a spectacle that hasn't occurred in decades. In fact, the last total solar eclipse for the United States was nearly 40 years ago. The rest of the U.S. and North America will see a partial eclipse, with the Moon covering up only part of the Sun. It is aptly named the Great American Eclipse.

This will be a great opportunity for our community to celebrate science, with fun, hands-on and multimedia activities, culminating in the eclipse event on August 21, 2017.

PARROTT-WOOD MEMORIAL LIBRARY will offer a range of public programs to bring the excitement of STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) to children, teens and adults. Great American Eclipse at Parrott-Wood Memorial Library. Parrott-Wood Memorial Library has joined the STAR Library Education Network (STAR_Net) and its NASA@ My Library initiative, which are providing resources and STEM activities to libraries across the nation related to the eclipse. Partners include NASA, the American Library Association, and many other organizations. This project was made possible through support from the NASA Science Mission Directorate, Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, Google, and the National Science Foundation.

Each year, the United Way of Jefferson County hosts a Campaign Kickoff Event as a way to ignite the
campaign and bring our community together. Last year, we had our second very successful Parade of Tables offering a lot of fun for those that participated! So, we will be hosting our Third Annual United Way Parade of Tables on Tuesday, August 22nd. This is an exciting OPPORTUNITY TO SHOWCASE YOUR BUSINESS OR ORGANIZATION and SUPPORT the United Way of Jefferson County.

This is how it works: The United Way will advertise and promote the event, provide light hors d’oeurves
and beverages, bring in a guest speaker and organize a silent auction. YOU have the opportunity to host
an 8-person table by decorating it in any way you like. For example, last year Franklin Realty’s two tables had potted succulents, soft green floral center pieces and decorative chalkboards with their name. Don’t own a business? No problem! You can gather a group of friends and have fun creating your own unique design! Either way, this event is a great way to support the United Way and the 23 agencies it supports.

A 60” round table with a white table cloth will be provided. You are to provide the centerpiece for the
table. Your table will also need to be set for 8 guests including dinnerware, silverware, glasses and napkins. Tables can be any theme that you want: holidays, seasonal, wedding, travel or your dream table. Remember, this is a great opportunity to promote your business and show off your talent! THERE WILL BE AN OPPORTUNITY
TO WIN A PRIZE FOR THE CROWD FAVORITE!

Sponsorship of a table is $160.00 ($80.00 will be tax deductible). Sponsors are asked to fill their table with eight guests. Registration and sponsorship payment is due by Friday, August 4th. Optional: You may include your table centerpiece and accessories in the silent auction to benefit United Way of Jefferson County.

Our Parade of Tables will be on Tuesday, August 22nd at Jefferson City Christian Church at 5:00 p.m. As
noted, our speaker for the event will be Carolyn Peck, Associate Coach for Vanderbilt’s Women’s Basketball Team and former ESPN Analyst. Orientation and Welcome Week Opportunities for Local
Businesses and Employers

There will be two opportunities offered once again for local
businesses and employers to come to campus at the start of
the academic year to meet and connect with our students
for the purposes of selling goods, employee recruitment, and
advertising services. As you are probably aware, we have a
zero-solicitation policy in place at Carson-Newman. However,
these events will be the exceptions to that policy. Consequently,
this will be a rare opportunity for businesses to come to campus
and freely introduce themselves and their services to our students.
We only require that personal information beyond the names and
emails of our students not be collected for any purpose that could
be understood as coercive in nature or intent.

This event takes place during Orientation for parents and new students.
It will be held outside on the student plaza between Blye-Poteat and Ted
Russell Halls. A table and two chairs will be provided to participating
businesses. If a tent is desired, the interested business will need to provide its
own. This location does not allow for access to electricity. Space for the event is
limited to 10 tables. Setup is at 9:15 a.m. Take-down will immediately follow
at 3:00 p.m.

This event will primarily cater to the parents of our new students.

Our FILL THE TRUCK WITH TOYS show is a little earlier in the year this year and at a different location. It will be August 26th from 10 am to 3 pm at the Bush's Visitor Center ball field in Dandridge (Chestnut Hill Area). Follow the signs as we are behind the visitor center. The registration is to bring a new, unwrapped toy to be given to under privileged children for Christmas. We will have door prizes, games, and three Peoples Choice trophies in no particular order. The Bushs Visitor Center Cafe will be open for a good ole down home meal or we will also have hot dogs, hamburgers and other sandwiches back next to the ball field. Also with our vendor, you can get coffee and doughnuts in the morning! Come and enjoy the 50s and 60s music that will be playing all day, the door prizes, Bush's museum, the cafe and enjoy the view of the beautiful mountains. GREENEVILLE, Tenn. – With dashing good looks, a guitar and a southern style, Easton Corbin is bringing a little bit of country to Greeneville to kick off the 2017-2018 season at NPAC. The country singer from Florida will be performing Saturday, August 26th at 7:30 PM at the Niswonger Performing Arts Center.

When Easton Corbin first broke into the country music scene in 2009, he did so with a bang by releasing two No. 1 singles -- “A Little More Country than That” and “Roll with It.” With those two hit singles, he became the first country male artist in 17 years to have his first two consecutive singles reach No. 1. After that, the world took notice. Corbin’s track record now includes three American Country Awards, the title of Billboard’s Top New Country Artist of 2010 and performances with some of the biggest names in country music. He is lauded for his traditional country sound, authentic lyrics and mastery of understatement. American Songwriter says, "Easton Corbin has one of those rare, glorious voices that was made – just made – for singing country music.”

Corbin’s last album About To Get Real was a No. 1 selling album that included his emotional “Are You With Me” and his Top 5 hit “Baby Be My Love Song” and was the followup to his first two successful albums which included his now signature No. 1 hits as well as the Top 5 hits “Lovin’ You Is Fun” and “All Over The Road.”

Easton Corbin performs at the Niswonger Performing Arts Center (NPAC) in historic downtown Greeneville, TN on Saturday, August 26th at 7:30 PM. Tickets are $50 for orchestra level seating, $45 for mezzanine seating and $40 for balcony seats. Tickets are on sale now for all performances for the entire 2017-2018 season and may be purchased online at www.npacgreeneville.com, in person at the NPAC box office, or by calling 423-638-1679.

NPAC offers online seat selection with no processing or delivery fees. There is a $1.50 ticketing fee per ticket regardless of purchase method. The box office hours are Monday through Friday, 10 AM until 5 PM. The 1150 seat performing arts center is located adjacent to the campus of Greeneville High School.
