The Jefferson County High Youth Leadership program has received a $2,000 Education and Community Foundation Grant through BB&T Bank’s Community Development group.

The grant is awarded to programs that support the advancement of literacy, education, community development and well-being throughout a given area. In addition, the grant is provided to areas that have a significant percentage of students that are on free-or-reduced lunch eligibility. Jefferson County met this criteria, with nearly 68% of students falling into that category.

Funding will be used to cover general expenses that support the mission and intent of the program, said Derrick Collins, Community Development & Membership Coordinator for the Jefferson County Chamber, which sponsors the Youth Leadership program. The two-year grant will cover the 2017-2018 and 2018-2019 classes.

Bryan Bolinsky of BB&T Bank said the Chamber of Commerce and the Jefferson County Youth Leadership program both display strong leadership qualities that line up directly with BB&T’s corporate mission.

“The Jefferson County Youth Leadership Program is a very unique program that we consider a wonderful investment in our community and future here in Jefferson County,” said Bolinsky. “The program prepares young people through education and practical hands-on experience in volunteerism, as well as affords them the

opportunity to explore the many local non-profit organizations here in Jefferson County.”

“We are truly honored that BB&T has chosen the Jefferson County Youth Leadership program for this grant,” said Collins. “The future of our county rests in the hearts and minds of our young students. They are the future leaders of the community and BB&T’s investment in their future will be instrumental in helping Jefferson County continue to prosper, and to help the Chamber pursue our mission to help make our community a great place to work and live.”
