MEDIA RELEASE Walters State Community College to Host TN Reconnect Workshops Walters State Community College is offering free workshops this fall to help adult learners prepare to attend under Tennessee Reconnect in fall of 2018. “Tennessee Reconnect will make college a reality for so many people in our service area, and we want everyone to be able to take advantage of the free tuition. While the program will not officially start until fall, 2018, these workshops will give prospective students a head start,” said Dr. Tony Miksa, president of Walters State. “These workshops will also help future students improve math, writing, and reading skills. I encourage everyone who is considering Tennessee Reconnect to take advantage of these free workshops.” This semester, the free workshops will cover reading and “The College Experience.” Attendees will be given the opportunity to take an end-of-course exam and, in the case of “The College Experience,” earn college credit. Students who improve reading skills will be able to start college-level courses without taking a learning support reading course. Learning support courses are often needed by nontraditional students who may have forgotten skills learned earlier in life. The workshops will meet for 10 weeks. Two times are scheduled: •Tuesdays, 5:30-9:30 p.m., orientation Sept. 5 (Register at http://ws.libcal.com/event/3503194.) OR •Thursdays, 9 a.m.-1 p.m., orientation Sept. 7. (Register at: http://ws.libcal.com/event/3503238) Currently, workshops are planned only on the Morristown campus. If enough interest develops, the workshops could be offered spring semester on other campuses. “The workshops will give our adult students the chance to improve basic skills and potentially earn college credit,” said Melissa Duff, executive director of the college’s Student Success Center. Duff is leading Walters State’s Tennessee Reconnect efforts. “These sessions will also get students used to a college schedule and give them the chance to meet other adult learners.” For more information or to register for the workshops, call the Student Success Center at Stu.Success.Center@ws.edu. CUTLINE: Melissa Duff, executive director of Walters State’s Student Success Center, assists Brandie Ferguson with fall registration. Ferguson is part of the Tennessee Reconnect Pilot Project. Tennessee Reconnect will pay tuition for adult learners beginning fall semester, 2018. Walters State is offering a series of workshops that will enable those students to get ready for college and even earn a few college credits. Are You Eligible for Tennessee Reconnect? The Tennessee Reconnect Act established a last-dollar scholarship for adults to attend community college without paying tuition. Adults must meet the follow qualifications to be eligible: •not have an associate’s or bachelor’s degree, •complete the FAFSA and be deemed an independent student, •participate in an advising program approved by the Tennessee Higher Education Commission, •be admitted to an eligible institution, like Walters State.
