Along with a sit down dinner of delectable cuisine, guests will be charmed by the Master of Ceremonies, Ray Snader, of WNPC Radio in Newport. Ray has been doing the news on WNPC since the station first signed on the air in 1978.

Ina Hughs, Knoxville News Sentinel columnist and noted author, will give the keynote address, and local artist Hank Niceley plans to entertain with some of his original musical compositions, as well as perhaps a short reading from the recent children’s book he has written about building a library. Niceley is donating this book to the new library.

Jefferson City FOL, a 501c3 nonprofit organization, has certainly put forth tremendous effort over these past few years to raise money to help build a new library. They have held book sales, cardboard boat races, dunking booths and concerts, and so far have banked $169,000 for their labors.

The Jefferson City Council, however, has requested that they contribute $300,000 toward finishing and furnishing the lovely proposed building. Fortunately, the land on which it is being built was a gift. The generous donor stipulated when he gave the land for the City Center that a section be set aside specifically for a new public library.

Bids on the project open soon, and with any luck on the weather front, the beautiful new 16,000 square foot building could be completed by late 2014 or early 2015.

Although the old Jefferson City Library, with its dedicated staff and volunteers, has certainly served the community well, it is time for change and expansion to meet the needs of a rapidly growing region. The public library has been and always will be an invaluable resource for the people who live here, and this newer, more modern showplace should attract many more patrons.

The new library will boast a high-ceilings, open-air floor plan with a bank of windows to make it feel even more spacious. There will be special well-lit reading areas, a stone fireplace, cathedral ceilings, a separate conference room and a computer section, as well as a small café area. Your donations will provide the furnishings.

Plan to attend the Friday, April 11, event. You can reserve a seat at a table with a generous donation to Friends of the Library. Become part of this phenomenal campaign to champion knowledge, awareness and understanding in the community, so that every time you visit the new library, or even drive by it, you can know that you helped make it a reality.

To make a donation or reserve a spot at the table, contact Heidi Thomas by email at hrthomas@charter.net
